Haiti is sovereign state that shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east. Its capital and most populous city is Port-au-Prince, which sits on the Gulf of Gonâve. The city has a population of 987,310, with 2,618,894 in the metropolitan area. Port-au-Prince is famous for its brightly colored gingerbread-style houses that date back to the nineteenth century. The city was devastated by the 2010 earthquake, with many buildings destroyed and 230,000 people killed.

Cap-Haïtien, on Haiti's north coast, is a commune that is home to around 190,000 people, and is the country's second-largest city. An historically wealthy city, Cap-Haïtien was once known as The Paris of the Antilles because of its architectural and artistic heritage. Cap-Haïtien has been an increasingly important part of the country since the earthquake in 2010, as it was not as badly damaged as other areas and was able to function as the headquarters of the recovery effort in the aftermath.

Haiti has 1 cities with more than a million people, 10 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 20 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Haiti is Port-au-Prince, with a population of 1,234,742 people.
