Muslim Countries 2019

Muslim is a term that refers to anyone who believes in Islamic principles. As a follower of the religious doctrine of Islam, Muslims are not necessarily only in certain parts of the world. There is a common misconception that Muslims only live in the Middle East, and this might stem from the fact that the religion of Islam originated in the Middle Eastern cities of Medina and Mecca, about six hundred years after Christianity was introduced to the world.

This was back in the seventh century, so Islam has been around for quite a long time at this point. Islam was definitely introduced initially to the northern region of Africa and the southern region of Europe, but the religion has spread across the globe over time. Muslims live all over the place, just like people of any other religion, so it is not accurate to say that Muslims are only local to certain parts of the world. However, there is an official organization amongst countries that identify as being predominantly Muslim.

This alliance is called the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC for short. Since its start in 1969, the OIC is comprised of fifty-seven countries, known as members of the OIC. The purpose of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is to give a voice to all Muslim countries around the world. You can think of it as a group of relatively like-minded individuals who surely have differing opinions on some matters, but for the most part, they have a similar idea of what is best for the Muslim community. Together, these countries advocate for their religion and work toward bettering the world, just like any other global alliance.

The OIC is very similar, if not completely comparable, to the United Nations, with the difference being that its central focus is on Muslim nations. The United Nations is not religiously affiliated, whereas the OIC most definitely is aligned with religious principles. The main purpose behind the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation is to discuss any clashes that are occuring between countries, with the goal being the promotion of harmony among countries all over the world, whether Muslim or not.

The breakdown of Muslim countries in percentages shows that the majority of the religious population resides in the Middle East, as well as the northern region of Africa. This finding makes a lot of sense, seeing as the religion of Islam was founded in the Middle East and Africa's northern tip is very near to the Middle East.
