Where is Cape Verde?

The country Cape Verde is part of Africa, though it is not situated on the continent itself. Cape Verde, or the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an archipelago made up of ten individual islands, all of which happen to be volcanic. Located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa, Cape Verde is considered part of the Macaronesia ecoregion.

GPS Coordinates and Surrounding Areas

Cape Verde is completely surrounded by water. As an island country off the western coast of Africa, Cape Verde can be found in the Atlantic Ocean. To the east of Cape Verde lie the African countries of Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia.

Cape Verde's GPS coordinates are a latitude of 16.5388° N and a longitude of 23.0418° W. These points place Cape Verde in both the northern and western hemispheres. The African country is positioned above the equator.

Cape Verde's Points of Extremity

In the north, the country of Cape Verde reaches as far as Ponta dol Sol, a city on the island of Santo Antão. The coordinate of the country's northernmost point is 17°12' N. Cape Verde's southernmost point is positioned at a latitude of 14°48' N. This point is in the city of Tantum, located on an island called Brava, or Ihla Brava.

To the east, Cape Verde extends as east as Ponta Meringuel. With a longitude of 22°40' W, the easternmost point of Cape Verde is located on the island of Boa Vista. In the west, the furthest point of Cape Verde is at a longitude of 25°25' W. This point is part of a smaller cape that exists near the Tarrafal do Monte Trigo. Just like the northernmost point, Cape Verde's westernmost point is also located on Santo Antão Island.

Total Area, Population Size, and Density Level

The total land area of Cape Verde is a grand sum of about 1,557 square miles. The square mileage of water areas is negligible considering the nature of this country. It is difficult to accurately calculate the coastlines of island countries due to the frequent yet inconsistent ebb and flow of the tides.

Cape Verde’s population currently hovers around approximately 556,888 people. Cape Verde’s population has risen by about 1.27% over the past year. By taking the population and dividing it by the country’s total area, we find that Cape Verde has a population density of roughly 358.
