Located along the East Coast, Delaware is part of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States. Delaware is south of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with Maryland to the west. Aside from its border with Maryland, Delaware is primarily surrounded by bodies of water.

Named after its own largest river, Delaware is situated on the coast of both the Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean. Delaware has an abundance of water at its disposal given its total area. Though there are not any lakes in Delaware, there are approximately 27 rivers and 435 streams flowing throughout the Diamond State.
Delaware is the forty-eighth largest state. Delaware earned its title of First State by quite literally being the first state to enter the Union. The formation of the United States of America all began with the admission of Delaware as a state.
Delaware can be found by tracing the coordinates 38.9108° N and 75.5277° W on a United States map. Delaware’s most extreme point to the north is along the Pennsylvania border, with coordinates of 39.8395° N and 75.5698° W. In the east, Delaware extends to Sussex County, with the easternmost point being part of State Route 1.
To the south, the most extreme point is also in Sussex County, but rather than being on a major roadway, the point sits along the Maryland border. The GPS coordinates of this most southern point of the state are 38.4510° N and 75.1860° W. The westernmost point of Delaware located along the border that separates Delaware and Maryland, just a mile and a half away from the tri-point with Pennsylvania.
The total area of Delaware is 1,981 square miles, with a width of 30 miles and a length of 96 miles. In terms of total area, Delaware is the second smallest state, right after Rhode Island. If you were to look at population rather than total area, Delaware is close to winning the title of Most Populated. As of 2018, Delaware is the 45th largest state in the U.S.A. based on population, with a census declaring the population at 961,939 people.
