Ames is a city located in the state of Iowa. It is located in Story County, where it is the largest city by population. The last recorded population at the time of the 2010 census showed that Ames had 58,965 residents. This number has increased substantially in the years that followed, with estimates showing an estimated population of 66,191. This puts the city of Ames as the 8th most populous municipality in the state. This city – which was once named one of the best places to live in the U.S. – has a total area of over 24 square miles with a population density of 2,436 people per square mile.
Over 84% of Ames’ population is white, while 3.4% is black, 8.8% is Asian, 1.1% is another race, and 2% is multiracial. Residents of Hispanic or Latino origin make up about 3.4% of the total population. Residents between the ages of 18 and 24 make up the largest age group in the city, accounting for about 40.5% of the total population. Over 13% of residents are under 18, while just 8.1% are at least 65 years old. More men than women live in this city, making up about 53% of the population. Since the 19th century, Ames’ population has only grown larger. The most recent estimates show that the population is up 12.3% since the last census of 2010. At this rate of growth, it won’t be long before Ames’ population has grown to exceed 100,000 residents.
