Kitchener is a city that is located in Ontario, Canada. At one time, the city was known as the Town of Berlin before becoming the City of Berlin before receiving the name Kitchener. The city is the 21st most populous in Canada with a population of 233,222 per the 2016 Census.

City Size and Population Density

The total area of the city is 136.89 square kilometers (52.85 square miles), with a density of 1,705.2 residents per square kilometer (4,416 per square mile) in the urban area. The metro area, which also includes Cambridge and Waterloo, is the 10th largest in Canada, boasting a population of over 523,000.

Kitchener Demographics

When breaking down the population by demographics, there are slightly more females than males, accounting for 50.8% and 49.2% of the population, respectively. The median age of Kitchener’s residents is 37, which falls below the national average. The city also has a higher percentage of children under the age of five and a lower percentage of residents over retirement age when compared to national averages.

The majority of the population are from Canada, but there is also a high percentage of German residents. They account for about one-quarter of the total population. Other groups include English, Irish, Scottish and French, to name a few.

Through the years, the city has seen significant population growth. The city passed the 100,000 resident milestone between 1966 and 1971 while passing the 200,000 milestone between 2001 and 2006. Most recently, the city saw a 6.4% growth between 2011 and 2016, which exceeds the rate of both Ontario and the country as a whole.
