One interesting fact about the city is that it is in the Guinness book for Records for having the largest castle in the world – covering 18 acres.

The total surface area that Prague occupies comes to about 298 kilometers squared (115 square miles). The population density comes to 4,600 residents per square kilometer (12,000 people living per square mile).

Neighborhoods in Prague

The population is estimated at 1.3 million people and is spread over 10 different districts within the city. The population, as one would expect, is denser in the very center and southern areas of Prague which includes Prague 2 and 3. Close to the center of the city is the old town area, home to many of the historic landmarks and points of touristic interest.

The personalities of the different neighborhoods vary from historic to modern, and from touristic to intensely traditional. Prague 2 is an up and coming area, a desirable place to live for young professionals, those more wealthy inhabitants and also international residents.

Prague 3 has a diverse offering with student bars, strip clubs and brothels on one side and good housing and new shopping areas on the other.

Prague 4 is a more working class area and houses some of the great traditional Czech restaurants.

Prague 7 it notable for its sporting areas and finally Prague 10 is a lesser known spot for tourists but offers excellent residential offering especially popular with families and young professionals.

Prague Culture and Population Demographics

Prague is a cultural hot spot and hosts many international events. It is a popular place for foreign visitors. It seems also a good place for foreigners to settle with 14% of Prague’s inhabitants being foreign.

Prague is an aging city – the oldest in the Czech Republic in fact. The older population is increasing faster than that of children.

Interestingly, over 44% of the male population in Prague are single.

In a recent census of the people over Prague, 46% did not disclose a religion, but of those that did, three-fifths are Roman Catholics. Many notable people from history have born, died or lived in Prague. It has been a popular place for writers and composers which is indicated across the city.

Prague Growth and Business

The growth increase from the previous census in 2001 to the census in 2011 was noted to be around 9% positive growth. Prague is included in the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites as a historical point of interest.

It is home to much history and many landmarks, museums and stories within its city walls. As well as this historical significance Prague is a very modern and commercial city. It is home to the most expensive street in central Europe with many salubrious neighborhoods in the areas surrounding the center. Businesses across Europe have come to Prague to house their headquarters and the city now accounts for 25% of the Czech Republic’s GDP. The city is now home to more service-oriented businesses such as hospitality, finance and commercial services with these sectors making up 80% of its business activity. 20% is still given over to industry based businesses.
