Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth of the United States and is located in the Pacific Ocean. It first became a commonwealth in 1978. Prior to this, the area was part of German New Guinea and the South Pacific Mandate. The region is made up of 14 islands that cover over 183 square miles.
