The Faroe Islands is an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Because it is an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands does have control over its domestic affairs. However, Denmark is responsible for military defense, currency, and foreign affairs.

The Faroe Islands is an archipelago that is located in the North Atlantic halfway between Iceland and Norway. The total land are is about 540 square miles, and the country has a total population of 51,095 people based on estimates taken in 2018. Based on the size and the population, the Faroe Islands is one of the least densely populated nations in the world with just 94.5 people per square mile.

The capital of the Faroe Islands is Torshavn. It is located on the island of Streymoy, which is the largest and most populous of all of the nation’s islands. Not only is Torshavn the capital, but it is also the largest city by population with over 13,000 inhabitants.

Most of the population are native Faroese. Over 43,000 are native-born, while nearly 3,600 were born in other countries in the Kingdom of Denmark. The remaining percentage of the population was born outside of this region. Other minority ethnic groups that call the Faroe Islands home are Danish, Asian, or African. There are over 75 different nationalities living in this country.

Faroese is the official language and is spoken nationwide. Danish is also an official language that is taught in schools and used by the government. The majority – over 95% -- of inhabitants practice Christianity. There are also smaller minority populations of Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims.
