Gibraltar is one of 14 British Overseas Territories. This territory is located on the Iberian Peninsula and is south of Spain. The total area of Gibraltar is just 2.6 square miles. As you would expect, a territory this small has a small population. According to 2015 estimates, the population is 32,194. Even though this is a very small population, the territory has a very high population density. With over 11,209 people per square mile, it is one of the most densely populated regions in the world.

In Gibraltar, one of the most populous areas is the urban area known as Westside. Approximately 98% of the territory’s total population lives in this area. There are several residential areas in the Westside. The Reclamation Areas have the highest population and is home to nearly 9,600 people. This is land that Gibraltar is reclaiming as the population continues to grow.

Even though Gibraltar is classified as a British Overseas Territory, there is a dispute with Spain. Spain has laid claim to Gibraltar, but native Gibraltarians have rejected both the idea of Spanish sovereignty and shared sovereignty.

Many ethnic groups call Gibraltar home. British residents make up over one-quarter of the population, while Spanish inhabitants also make up over 25% of the total population. Other ethnic groups include Italian, Portuguese, and Maltese. There are smaller minority populations of ethnic groups including Chinese, French, Japanese, and Polish.

Gibraltar’s official language is English and is spoken by most inhabitants. It is also used in schools and by the government. However, many Gibraltarians speak two languages: English and Spanish. Other languages spoken throughout this territory include Arabic, Hindi, and Maltese. When it comes to religion, nearly three-quarters of Gibraltarians profess the Roman Catholic faith. Other religions include the Church of England, Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu.

The current population of Gibraltar is 33,698 based on projections of the latest available data.
