What States Have Legalized Sports Betting?

Sports betting has become more popular during the past few years, particularly with a lot of professional sports leagues partnering with numerous sports betting companies. For a long time, sports betting has been legal in Europe, and with a lot of advances made in the digital world, many people are interested in sports betting in the United States as well. Now, there are a lot of states that have legalized sports betting.

Some states have legalized online sports betting. These states include Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

There is another group of states that allow sports betting in person only. In Delaware, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, and South Dakota people must go through a licensed casino in order to participate in any sports betting activities.

Are There Any States Working on Launching Sports Betting?

In addition to the states above, there are some states that have passed a bill legalizing sports betting, but it is not yet operational. Maine, Massachusetts, and Nebraska have already passed bills legalizing sports betting or are in the process of doing so, but it is not yet possible to do so because they are still working on the infrastructure. It is anticipated that it will become available soon.

Why Are States Interested in Legalizing Sports Betting?

There are several reasons why so many states are interested in legalizing sports betting. First, many states are interested in legalizing sports betting because their citizens want it. The attitude towards sports betting has changed during the past few years, and many states are simply looking to get up with the times. Furthermore, a lot of states are interested in legalizing sports betting because they know they can make a tremendous amount of money off of it. A lot of states are struggling financially, and by introducing sports betting, they have another thing they can tax. This can bring in additional revenue that states can use to improve their infrastructure.
