Richmond, one of the oldest cities in America, is the capital of Virginia. Its history dates back to hundreds of years ago and remains relevant even today. Today, Richmond boasts of hosting top-dollar companies, tourist sites, education centers, among other things.
History
During the civil war, Richmond served as the confederate states of America's capital. During that period, it was the source of munitions and weapons for the confederacy's army. There were battles for five years as the confederate army did its best to defend the city from union capture. Richmond became Virginia's capital in 1780 but was burnt down in 1781 by the British and later rebuilt. In 1871, it gained the status of an independent city.
Location
Richmond sits in the eastern part of Virginia, at the highest point of the James River. The area is characterized by rolling hills and lies between the blue ridge mountains and tidewater region. Some of the most notable water bodies in the region include the Appomatox river, James River and Chickahominy River.

Transportation
The capital is served by the Richmond international airport located in Sandston. You can also bike comfortably since there are dedicated cycling lanes, walk around, hop in a GRTC bus or use a taxi.
Former Capitals of Virginia
Virginia has had other two capitals since its formation. These include Jamestown and Williamsburg. James Town was the capital for 92 years, after which the English colonists abandoned it after the statehouse burning in 1698. The capital was later shifted to Williamsburg, formerly known as middle plantation, in 1699. it was later moved to Richmond with the hope that it would be safe from British attacks.

Richmond lies 42 meters above sea level, with a warm and temperate climate. Its average temperature is 14.8 degrees, while its annual rainfall is 1122mm. July marks its hottest month, with temperatures shooting up to 89.7°.
Its summers are hot and humid, while winters are moderately cold. Precipitation is unevenly distributed annually, and annual snowfall is moderate with an average of 27cm.
