Population Growth in Mobile

Mobile’s population saw rapid growth throughout the 19th century and through the early half of the 20th century. In 1960, the population reached its peak of over 202,000 residents. This was more than double the number recorded at the time of the 1940 census. However, in 1970, the population dropped below 200,000. It rose again in 1980 before dropping again in 1990. Though 2000 saw some growth, it did not again surpass 200,000. Recent population estimates show that the population is down over 1% since the 2010 census.
