Arkansas’ population of just over 3 million is spread across various cities and towns throughout the state. The state’s largest city by population is Little Rock, which boasts a population of almost 200,000 residents and also serves as the state’s capital. Little Rock is the state’s only city with a population that exceeds 100,000 residents. Fort Smith is the second most populous city in the state, but falls far behing Little Rock with just over 88,000 residents. Thirty-seven Arkansas cities have populations of at least 10,000. The state has a total of 502 incorporated municipalities that are spread across 75 counties.
The municipalities are broken up into three different categories based on population. First Class cities have over 2,500 residents, Second Class cities must have a population of at least 500 but no more than 2,499, while Incorporated Towns have populations of less than 500. The smallest town in Arkansas is Sherill, which has just 84 residents according to data from the 2010 U.S. Census. Another city, Amagon, had a population of less than 100 residents.
