Its state capital, Des Moines, is the most populated city in the state, with a population of over 210,000 people. The second most populous city is Cedar Rapids, with just over 130,000, while Davenport has over 102,000 residents, making it the third most populous and rounding out all cities with populations that exceed 100,000. The state has a total of 37 cities with populations that fall between 10,000 and 100,000.

In all, Iowa has 947 incorporated cities. These cities are spread across 99 counties. Any area that is incorporated in this state is designated as a city with no regards to population counts. There are six different types of government structures for cities in Iowa to choose from. Many have the mayor-council form of government. There are multiple cities that have less than 500 residents, many which have even less than 100. The least populous cities in the state include Beaconsfield in Ringgold County and Le Roy located in Decatur County, each of which have populations of just 15 people per the 2010 U.S. Census.
