France’s Most Extreme Points

In the north, France reaches a point of extremity at a latitude of 51°05' N. This point is located in Bray-Dunes which is a commune in the French department of Nord. France’s northernmost point ranks as the twenty-fourth most northern point in the world, compared to all other countries around the globe.

France’s southernmost point differs depending on whether islands are included in the decision or not. On the mainland, France’s most extreme point in the south is situated at a latitude of 42°20' N. This point is found atop the peak of Puig de Comanegra, a mountain in the Pyrenees Mountain Range. Looking offshore, the furthest point of southern France is located on the Boynes Islands or the Îles de Boynes in French. As part of the Kerguelen archipelago, these islands are at a latitude of 50°01' S.

The easternmost point of France is similar to its southernmost point in that there are two of them. At a longitude of 8°13' E, this point is located in the commune of Lauterbourg in the French department of Bas-Rhin. Offshore, the other easternmost point of France is on the island of Réunion. With a longitude of 55°50' E, this point can be found in the Sainte-Rose Commune.

To the west, France’s most extreme point is also a debate between two points. The westernmost point of the country’s mainland is in Pointe de Corsen. With a longitude of 4°47' W, this point is part of the Plouarzel Commune in the Finistère Department of France. Looking beyond the mainland, France’s furthest offshore point to the west is on the island of La Pointe-Noire. As part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, this point is located in the Caribbean Sea and considered part of the French Guadeloupe Region.
