Data Notes

  • The 2020 comparison uses exact census counts restated on 2025 boundaries in the 2025 census. Absolute change is 2025 population minus 2020 population; percentage change divides that difference by the 2020 population.
  • Area comes from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and includes inland water. Density is 2025 population divided by the displayed total area. Published census densities can differ because they exclude territory outside census coverage, including parts of Hokkaido.
  • Historical figures before 2020 retain the source's rounding. The usual reference date is October 1, except for the 1944, 1945, and 1946 population surveys. The historical source excludes military personnel in 1941–1943 and does not report Okinawa in 1945–1971.
  • These Statistics Bureau of Japan figures are separate from the UN-based population on Japan's main page. Rounded historical prefecture counts can also differ slightly from the national totals published by the same source.
