Scottish National Anthem

Scotland has a unique situation with its national anthem in that it does not have an official anthem. It does, however, have several different proposed national anthems. These anthems include “Flower of Scotland,” “Auld Lang Syne,” “Caledonia,” “Scots Wha Hae,” Scotland the Brave,” “Highland Cathedral, “The Thistle o’ Scotland,” and “Highland Cathedral.”

Lawyers for the Scottish Parliament have argued that a national anthem should be chosen by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. There have been multiple petitions to get a national anthem, but since it is not a political priority, no action has been taken to select a song. At most sporting events in Scotland, “Flower of Scotland” is played. A poll conducted also showed that this anthem was a favorite among citizens, capturing 41% of votes. As of 2018, no progress has been made in selecting an official national anthem.

Scottish National Anthem Lyrics

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
