Soviet Union National Anthem

The national anthem of the Soviet Union was known as the State Anthem of the Soviet. This song served as the national anthem for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the state anthem for the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The music for the anthem was originally written by Alexander Alexandrov in approximately 1938. The lyrics for the song were written by Gabriel El-Registan and Sergey Mikhalkov in 1943, and the lyrics were revised in 1977. The song was first adopted in 1944 and was later modified in 1977 and readopted by the government. The changes to the lyrics included removing references to Joseph Stalin.

The anthem was relinquished in 1990 as the state anthem of the Russian SFSR. The following year, it was relinquished by the Soviet Union following its dissolution. However, the melody of the song can still be heard as it is used by Russia, although the lyrics have been changed.

Soviet Union National Anthem Lyrics

An unbreakable union of free republics,
Great Russia united forever.
Long live the creation of the will of the people,
The united, mighty Soviet Union!

Chorus:
Be glorious, our free Fatherland,
A reliable stronghold of the peoples' friendship!
Party of Lenin, strength of the people,
Leads us to the triumph of communism!

Through tempests the sun of freedom shone to us,
And the great Lenin illuminated our path,
To a just cause he raised up the people,
To labour and heroic deeds he inspired us!

Chorus

In the victory of the immortal ideas of Communism
We see the future of our country,
And to the Red Banner of our glorious Fatherland
We shall always be selflessly true!

Chorus
