Amazon revenue by country has increased by as much as 127.5 percent in the world since the Covid-19 pandemic. The worldwide Amazon revenue in 2019 was $280 billion while in 2020 it was $386 billion. By the end of 2023, Amazon’s global revenue topped approximately $575 billion—up 12% year-over-year from 2022—with North America at $353 billion, International at $131 billion, and AWS at $91 billion. 2024 numbers have Amazon’s revenue at just above $642 billion.
Every region in the world experienced growth in the double digits during and after the global pandemic. Historically, top-selling categories on Amazon have been tech, but during the pandemic, grocery and daily essentials topped the list of sales worldwide. To date, the United States, where Amazon was founded, continues to hold the lead in Amazon revenue by country.
Amazon has the most revenue from the United States – nearly 70% of its global sales come from North America. By 2020, the United States held 68.3 percent of the international revenue share with annual revenue at $263.52 billion, an increase of 36.1 percent from the $193.63 billion in sales of 2019. By 2023, Amazon’s revenue from the United States rose even further, reaching approximately $396 billion and reinforcing the U.S. as its most dominant and profitable market. By 2024, the sales grew to $438 billion. In the United States, Amazon’s lead competitors are Costco, Best Buy, and Walmart. Technology products continue to dominate the sales on Amazon in the United States and around the world.
When looking at Amazon revenue by country, Germany’s revenue grew from $22.23 billion in 2019 to approximately $37.56 billion by 2023. Germany experienced steady post-pandemic growth, with an average year-over-year increase of about 11–12 percent. While in 2020 Germany contributed about 7.7 percent of Amazon’s global revenue, this share declined slightly to around 6.5 percent by 2023 as other markets expanded more rapidly. In 2024, Amazon Germany brought in about $40.9 billion in revenue, an 8.7% year-over-year increase. This represented roughly 6.4% of Amazon’s global revenue, continuing a gradual decline from 7.7% in 2020 as other markets grew faster.
At $33.59 billion in annual sales as of 2023, the United Kingdom is a known leader in the world in terms of Amazon’s revenue. Amazon holds about 30% of the UK e-commerce market, and its UK sales grew around 12% between 2022 and 2023, reflecting sustained expansion. The UK accounted for roughly 6.9% of Amazon’s global revenue in 2023. In Great Britain, Amazon faces strong competition from eBay, Etsy, and Tesco, with eBay being the second-largest e-commerce platform and Etsy in third place after Amazon. In 2024, Amazon’s UK revenue rose to about $37.9 billion, increasing its share of global revenue to roughly 5.9%.
Japan is another world leader in terms of Amazon’s revenue by country with 5.3 percent of revenue in 2020 and sales of $26 billion in 2023, quite an increase from $20.46 billion in 2020. In 2024, Amazon’s Japan revenue grew to about $27.4 billion, representing roughly 4.3% of global revenue. Amazon does experience some competition from the Japanese e-commerce site known as Rakuten. Amazon likes the growth potential in Japan and is investing in more distribution centers and its current warehouses today.
When looking at the rest of the world, Amazon has large markets. The largest markets for Amazon after those listed here include Turkey, Australia, Mexico, India, and Brazil. In the world, after eBay, Amazon’s largest e-commerce competition comes from companies such as Flipkart in India, Alibaba in China, and Mercado Libre in Latin America. Today, technology and electronics consistently rank as Amazon’s top-selling product categories, and that is consistent across almost all countries.
