  • The concept of countries “inside” South Africa can be taken multiple ways. If the question is “which country is actually geographically landlocked within the larger country of South Africa?” the only answer is Lesotho.
  • However, if the question is “which countries are located in the Southern African region?” several other countries may also qualify.
  • As with most unofficial classifications, sources often disagree about which countries are and are not part of Southern Africa. The “General Inclusion” column compiles the results of several such various sources.
  • The United Nations Geoscheme divides Africa into five subregions: Eastern Africa, Middle Africa, Northern Africa, Southern Africa, and Western Africa
  • The Southern African Development Community (SADC) was established in 1980 to facilitate co-operation in the region
