According to the United States Geological Service, many of the world’s largest diamond mines have matured past peak production levels and are expected to close in the near future. As this happens, global production of natural diamonds is expected to decline, with production of synthetic/manufactured diamonds expanding substantially.
The overwhelming majority of diamonds used are not gem-quality ornamental diamonds, but rather industrial diamonds and diamond powder, which are used in are computer chip production, construction and demoltion, drilling and mining, machinery manufacturing, stone cutting and polishing, and transportation (infrastructure and vehicles).
