Data have been rounded to the nearest hundred thousand.
853.8 million people in India communicated via WhatsApp in 2024, up from 487.5 million in 2021. It is used more often than Facebook Messenger, overshadowing it by a surprising 732 million users.
Perhaps this can be explained by WhatsApp being tied to a phone number with Messenger requiring a Facebook account or connection. That makes WhatsApp feel more universal and seamless, especially in countries where Facebook usage isn’t as dominant but mobile numbers are.
In Brazil, 148 million people used this app in 2024, which adds up to 98% of those who have this chatting tool installed on their smartphones. The number of users also increased from the 118.5 million people using WhatsApp to communicate in 2021. Instagram is the second most used app in 2024, and Facebook Messenger is the third most used messaging app in Brazil.
In 2024, 98 million mobile users spent time on WhatsApp, which is up from 79.6 million in 2021. In the third quarter of 2024, 50% of U.S. consumers used it daily, 78% used it weekly, and 91% used it monthly. It seems to be most popular among the 26-35 age group not only in the U.S. but other countries worldwide. These percentages seem to have been stable for the past four years.
112 million Indonesian people communicated using WhatsApp in 2024, a number which has increased from the 2021 WhatsApp use total of 84.8 million people.
74 million people in Mexico used WhatsApp for communication, which is a notable increase from 60 million in 2021. The country remains in the top six among those using this messaging system.
Since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, WhatsApp has stayed massively popular in Russia—with over 66 million users by 2024—but the pressure’s been mounting. Russian authorities have started tightening the rules, recently adding WhatsApp to a list that forces platforms to store user data and hand it over to law enforcement if asked. If WhatsApp doesn’t play by those rules, it could be blocked in 2025—putting the app in a tricky spot between protecting user privacy and staying available in the country.
As of 2024, WhatsApp is practically everywhere in Pakistan, with around 52 million people using it to stay connected. It’s a go-to app for chatting, calling, and sharing—especially because it works well even when mobile plans are tight on data. Pakistan even ranked third in the world for WhatsApp downloads last year. While the app has faced a few hiccups during political protests, it’s still the everyday lifeline for millions across the country.
In the Philippines, WhatsApp has really taken off—by the end of 2024, around 88 million people were using it, making the country the eighth biggest market. With so many Filipinos living and working abroad, the app’s free messaging and calls help families stay close no matter the distance. It’s not just for catching up with friends either—people use it for business, school, and even community updates. For many, it’s become an essential part of daily life.
In Turkey, WhatsApp is everywhere—about 60 million people use it regularly, making it the country’s top messaging app as of 2024. Whether it’s catching up with friends, checking in with family, or running a small business, it’s become the go-to tool for staying connected. In fact, over 86% of internet users aged 16 to 74 are on it—more than those on YouTube or Instagram. Simple, fast, and reliable, WhatsApp has become part of daily life for just about everyone in Turkey.
In Egypt, WhatsApp is a daily essential for around 56 million people, making it one of the country’s most-used apps as of 2024. It’s the go-to tool for Egyptians thanks to its ease of use and affordability. Even WhatsApp Business is booming, with over 30 million downloads. Despite some ups and downs in downloads earlier in 2024, the app’s popularity hasn’t slowed down—it just keeps growing.
