Telangana is a newly-formed state in India located in the middle-south strategy of the Indian peninsula. Telangana borders Maharashtra to its southeast, Andhra Pradesh to its north, Karnataka to its east, and Chhattisgarh to its southwest.
Telangana has a population of 39.64 million people, up from 35.19 million in 2011. On June 2, 2014, Telangana was separated from the northwestern part of Andhra Pradesh and became the newly formed 28th state of India. Telangana is the 11th-largest state with a geographical area of 112,077 square kilometers and 12th most populated state in India.
The most famous and largest city in Telangana is Hyderabad, which is also the state’s capital. Hyderabad is the fourth-most populous city in India with a population of approximately 6.9 million people. Hyderabad is also the fifth-largest contributor to India’s overall GDP with an output of US$74 billion. The city is known for its monuments, such as the fort of Golconda and Charminar. The city is also known for its many traditional bazaars.
The second-largest city in Telangana is Warangal with a population of 811,844. Although Warangal is the second-most populous city in the state, it is a fraction of Hyderabad’s size. The city is known for its fortresses, temples, and stone gateways left by the Kakatiya dynasty in 1163, which helped the city become a popular tourist attraction.
Nizamabad is the third-largest city in Telangana with a population of 311,152, according to the 2011 census. In 2017, the Government of Telangana merged the adjoining villages of Nizamabad Rural Mandal into Nizamabad Urban Constituency increasing the population to 633,933.
The sex ratio in Telangana is 988 females to 1000 males. The literacy rate is 66.46% according to the 2011 census, which is below the national average. The male literacy rate is 74.95% and the female literacy rate is 57.92% respectively.
The official language of Telangana is Telugu, one of the classical Indian languages, and the second official language is Urdu. About 77% of the Telangana population speaks Telugu, 12% speak Urdu, and 13% speak other languages.
In terms of religion, Telangana is primarily comprised of Hindus, which make up 85.1% of the population. There are also considerable numbers of Muslims (12.7%) and Christians (1.3%) in the population, with other religions only making up 0.9% of the population.
