Until the 1200s, the bishops of Strasbourg governed the city, but the citizens rebelled in 1262. The city was a Free imperial city, until coming under French rule in the 1600s. During the 1800s, the city went under German control. In the 1940s, the French again ruled Strasbourg.

The city played a significant role in Protestant Reformation and other parts of Christianity. The city also saw its darker times, including the Strasbourg massacre, the Siege of Strasbourg, the occupation of the Nazis, and bombing raids.

The city has served as the seat of European Institutions since 1949. The city today has signs of its history throughout, with multiple medieval churches still standing. The city has many parts that showcase the history and culture of Strasbourg and a variety of museums.
