The city played a significant role in Protestant Reformation and other parts of Christianity. The city also saw its darker times, including the Strasbourg massacre, the Siege of Strasbourg, the occupation of the Nazis, and bombing raids.

The population rose to almost 200,000 during the 1930s before declining to 175,000 in the 1940s - due to the chaos brought by the war in this time period. The population had rebounded by the next decade, climbing to over 200,000. Since then, the city has mostly experienced positive growth and is quickly approaching 300,000.
