The town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and was abandoned shortly after. It was rebuilt, and during the 19th century, the population began to climb, and the economy was booming because of textiles and shipping traffic.
The city served as a critical port during World War II. An American base was also constructed in the city. In the years that followed, the city gained its independence from France, attracted top businesses, and has a thriving tourism industry. The city is now known as the business and economic capital of Morocco.
