Southampton Overview

The city of Southampton is one of the smallest cities in Ontario, but the personality of the city along with its proximity to the ocean makes it one of the most popular travel destinations in the region. The city attracts many tourists annually, but some of those tourists have obviously liked it enough to stay, as the city grows each year.
Demographics
The city of Southampton in Ontario has a population of 3,678 as of the 2016 census. The previous census showed the population at 3,382, so the growth between that time was 8.8% of the total population. That is almost double the growth rate of the rest of Ontario (4.6%) for the same period. The population density of Southampton is another draw to the city as it is only 571.3 people for every kilometer. The total land within the city is 6.33 kilometer. Females in the city make up 1,910 of the total population and males fall slightly behind at 1,755.
Ages
The largest age group in the city of Southampton is between 15 and 64, totaling 55.1% of the population. The second largest age bracket are those that are 65 and older at 34.1% of the population. The average age of residents within Southampton is 51.8. That is quite a bit higher than the average age for the rest of Ontario at 41 years. The smallest numbers when it comes to age groups in Southampton is the younger demographic below the age of 15. They make up just 10.8% of the population, while those that are 85 and older total 4.8% of the population of the city.
Homes
The locals that live in Southampton year-round do so in 1,720 dwellings as of the 2016 census. Single detached homes make up the majority of dwellings at 1,470. As this is not a high rise friendly city, you will find no apartment buildings with many stories and only 170 dwellings are considered apartments. The second largest segment of dwellings are row houses. There are 45 row houses within Southampton, five duplex homes, and only five mobile structures. The average household size is just two people which is lower than the Ontario family average of 2.6 people. The limited number of people in the home is likely because Southampton attracts older individuals.
Families
There are currently 3,270 people within Southampton that are above the age of 15 and therefore eligible for marriage.
