Estimated Polar Bear Populations and Regions Occupied
CanadaCanada has an estimated 16,000 polar bears, spread across Labrador, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec, and Yukon Territory.
GreenlandGreenland's polar bear population is unclear, but could include 7,000+ polar bears, spread among west Greenland, southeast Greenland, the Davis Strait, and the Kane Basin.
NorwayApproximately 270 polar bears live within the boundaries of the Svalbard archipelago itself and an additional population of 700+ live on the sea ice north of Svalbard.
RussiaRussia is home to an estimated 3,000 polar bears, which live around Chukotka, Northern European Russia, and Siberia
United StatesAn estimated 4,000-7,000 polar bears live in Alaska and on the surrounding sea ice. The population is known to be in decline.
  • The global polar bear population is estimated to be 20,000-31,000 individuals as of 2023, shared between all countries included in the species’ range: Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia, and the United States, as well as in international polar regions.
  • Polar bears often roam from one country’s territory into another, particularly in the winter when the polar ice reaches its broadest spread. As such, per-country population estimates are logistically challenging and can become outdated very quickly.
  • While polar bears are occasionally sighted in Iceland, they are believed to be “visitors” from Greenland and not members of a permanent, sustainable population.
