Dundee's 2024 population is now estimated at 46,431. In 2001, the population of Dundee was 28,053.
Dundee is a city that is located in Scotland. In terms of population, it is the fourth-largest city in the country. As of 2016, the population was estimated to be 148,270. Given its size, this population count makes the city one of the most densely populated in all of Scotland. This city has a rich history dating back to its establishment in the 11th century, and its industries, attractions, and other features make it not only a great place to visit but a place that many people – from Scotland and beyond – choose to call home.
The city of Dundee covers a total area of approximately 60 square kilometers (20 square miles), and the population density comes to about 2,478 individuals living per square kilometer.
Dundee is the fourth most populated city in Scotland with a population that is quickly reaching 150,000 people. It is the 51st-most populous cities in all of the United Kingdom. Based on population estimates from 2016 and the size of the city, Dundee is the second most densely populated cities in Scotland.
Surprisingly, though, Dundee’s population is not at its highest. This occurred during the census taken in 1971 when the population exceeded 180,000. Today, over 94% of the population was born in the United Kingdom. Breaking this down further, over 87% of the population was born in Scotland.
The demographic group of people ages 30 to 44 is the largest group, comprising 20% of the total population. The city also has many people that have come to the city from Italy and has one of the largest Asian communities in the country. The city is also home to many students, making up one in seven people.
The place of birth of the town's residents was 94.16% United Kingdom (including 87.85% from Scotland), 0.42% Republic of Ireland, 1.33% from other European Union (EU) countries, and 3.09% from elsewhere in the world.
The area of Dundee was thought to be inhabited during the 11th century, but the city grew substantially after it was given to the Earl of Huntingdon. The city was designated as a trading center, which led to growth in population. In 1292, the city was designated as a Royal Burgh. The city changed hands multiple times during the 1300s through 1500s. Following a recession in the 15th century, the city turned to textiles as its primary industry, with the development of four-story mills revolutionizing the industry. The population continued to grow, especially as the whaling industry expanded.
The conversion of linen to jute saw further expansion throughout the city in terms of its population, as the city’s economy was thriving and attracting immigrants from areas including Ireland. During this time, the jute mills weren’t the only industry that was thriving, as Dundee saw success from maritime and shipbuilding industries.
During the early 20th century, the success from jute production was beginning to decline because of a decreased demand for the textile, as well as the competition from Calcutta. Today, the city has turned to more modern industries, including microelectronics, to boost its economy. The city also has plans in place to revitalize the Dundee Waterfront area by 2031 for current residents and to attract new residents.
The city of Dundee has seen highs and lows throughout its long history when it comes to population. However, in more recent years, it has become a place where immigrants have chosen to call home. It also has a high rate of student residents that have come from other cities as well as other countries to study, helping to elevate the population. Despite recent declines, the population should continue to grow at a steady rate into the future.
