Austria Overview

Austria has 1 cities with more than a million people, 9 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 83 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Austria is Vienna, with a population of 2,005,500 people.

Austria is known for its spectacular mountain scenery, baroque architecture and quaint villages, but it also has several important cities. The largest of these is the capital city of Vienna, Austria’s cultural, commercial, and political center. The city of Vienna lies on the Danube River and has been home to many famous residents, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud. Vienna has a population of about 1.8 million (this increases to 2.6 million if the greater metropolitan area is included, and equates to almost one third of country’s total population).

Austria’s other key cities are significantly smaller, but no less interesting. Salzburg and Innsbruck are both popular tourist destinations with fascinating histories and cultural heritages. Salzburg, with its population of 148,420, is the birthplace of Mozart, and has many churches, castles and palaces, as well as an old town that is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also famous for being the setting of The Sound of Music. Innsbruck is the fifth-largest city in Austria, with 126,851 residents, and is a hugely popular winter sports destination, having hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. Other important cities in Austria include Graz and Linz, with populations of 273,838 and 198,181, respectively.
