Growth is always an essential aspect of any city and Jaipur is undoubtedly a city of growth. This Northern Indian city is one of the most consistently growing cities in the country. Each year, the population of Jaipur increases by a steady 3%, and the current estimated population remains strong at 3,653,927. People are drawn to many aspects of the city, including its rich architectural history and many tourist attractions.
Merely saying that there is a set number of people within a city is not always enough to truly grasp the demographic scope of an area. Although a national census has not calculated the numbers for recent years, the 2011 census states that there are 898 females for every 1000 males, with the exact number of females totaling 1,454,070 compared with 1,619,280 males.
Jaipur is relatively densely populated, with 6,500 residents per square kilometer (or 17,000 residents per square mile). The total area that the city covers 467 square kilometers (approximately 180 square miles).
Jaipur is an Indian city, and therefore the primary religion is Hindu. Not surprisingly, there are many Hindu influences in the city that 89% of its inhabitants claim as their chosen religion. Other religions represented in Jaipur are Islam, which is practiced by 7% of the population, while Christianity, Jainism, Sikh, and Buddhism make up the remaining 4% of the population.
The city of Jaipur is in the state of Rajasthan, so Rajasthani is the most widely-spoken language. Other languages spoken within the city include English, Marwari, and Hindi.
For most, the best time to visit Jaipur is during the winter months between October and March due to the milder climate. The other two seasons experienced in Jaipur are summer and monsoon season. Summer is between March and June and, during these hot months, the temperature climbs to a high of 45 C and a low of a 25 C. Monsoon season has the wettest months of the year, and this makes travel much more of a challenge. People visiting between July and September will have to plan their day around the rain.
India is a country that is very accepting of new technologies, and Jaipur is home to some of the best tech schools anywhere, including the University of Rajasthan, Malaviya National Institute of Technology, and Jaipur LMN Institute of Information Technology. This is excellent news for those growing up within the city of Jaipur as the literacy rate is growing steadily each year. The percentage of literate adults once stood at a just 38.55% in 1991 but has increased to 67.06% according to a 2011 census.
