North Macedonia, formerly known as Macedonia until February 2019, is the 148th-most populous country in the world, with a population of 2.08 million people. North Macedonia has 34 cities. Five cities have populations of over 50,000 people. The most populous city is Skopje, which is also the nation’s capital. Skopje has over 506,000 people, about 18.7% of the country’s total population. Skopje also serves as the political, academic, economic, and cultural center. The other four cities with populations over 50,000 are Bitola with 74,550, Kumanovo with 70,842, Prilep with 66,246, and Tetovo with 52,915. Seventeen towns have populations between 10,000 and 50,000.
