Many dating apps ask users to swipe on profiles to find matches. Because this setup is so familiar to users, Bumble positioned itself as a “feminist” dating app in order to stand out. The theory was that straight women would be more comfortable if they were the ones who initiated contact, so Bumble became known for being the app where the woman messages first.
Since its launch in 2014, Bumble has been used by daters around the world. However, Bumble gets the most traffic from India: 4.1 million monthly hits. This accounts for 15.74% of Bumble’s total worldwide traffic. This is unsurprising as India is home to well over a billion people and has the largest population of any country in the world. According to The Times of India, a survey of Indian dating app users revealed that over half of women in Delhi and Mumbai prefer meeting people through dating apps. That same survey revealed that a significant percentage of dating app users, 78%, are active users and not simply casually curious.
Dating apps are also popular in China, which has a similar population to India. While Bumble does see significant traffic from China, especially in densely populated cities, the app is not officially available there, leaving the official number two spot open for the United States.
As the third most populated country, the US has a population of 340 million people, which means it isn’t nearly as populous as India and China, both of which have over 1.4 billion people. Even so, the United States gives significant traffic to Bumble: 3.2 million hits each month, making up 12.24% of Bumble’s total traffic. Germany’s population of 83 million is significantly smaller, but they have similar Bumble usage. Each month, Bumble sees 2.9 million monthly hits from Germany, accounting for 10.88% of Bumble’s total traffic.
It is unsurprising that Bumble receives less traffic from smaller countries. For example, the United Kingdom has a population of 67 million and 1.5 million Bumble hits each month. This is only slightly higher than Canada, which has a population of 38 million and 1.4 million Bumble hits. Both countries account for less than 6% of Bumble’s monthly users: 5.8% for the United Kingdom and 5.52% for Canada.
