Euro Health Consumer Index by Country 2024

The Euro Health Consumer Index, also known as EHCI, compares the healthcare systems across Europe. These comparisons include wait times, results, and generosity and are based on 48 indicators. When it comes to EHCI, some countries have better scores than others. In this article, we will look at some of the statistics of EHCI and what scores countries have been awarded with in 2023.

Overall, Switzerland has the highest score. Currently, the country has a score of 893. However, the Netherlands is not far behind the country and comes in second place with a score of 883. Norway is next on the list and currently has a score of 857. Denmark, with a score of 855, and Belgium with a score of 849 finish out the top five.

Falling just out of the top five is Finland, which has a score of 839. Luxembourg follows with a score of 809, which is only slightly higher than Sweden's score of 800 and Austria's score of 799. Iceland is the last country in the top ten and has a score of 797.

Just as some countries have great EHCI scores, there are some countries where scores are lower than desirable. For example, Albania has a total score of just 544. Romania is slightly higher with a score of 549 and is joined by Hungary in the lower ranks with a score of 565. Poland is next in line with a score of 585, which is only slightly lower than Poland's score of 585. The last of the bottom five on the list is Bulgaria. The country has a total score of 591.

Other factors that are important to note are the accessibility scores, outcomes scores, and patient rights and information scores. Currently, it's Switzerland that has the top accessibility score. The country has a score of 225. Ireland is the country with the lowest accessibility score and only has a rating of 75.

Switzerland again takes the top prize in the outcomes score and has been awarded 278 points in 2023. However, this same score is shared by Finland and Norway. Romania, with a score of 133 has the lowest outcomes score in 2023.

The final indicator is the patient rights and information score. The Netherlands and Norway hold the highest scores in this category. Albania and Greece share the bottom spots for this score and both clock in at 67.

  • The Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI) was produced from 2005 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2018 by Health Consumer Powerhouse, a Swedish health policy think tank.
  • Data shown are from 2018, the most recent year for which the EHCI has been published as of 2023.
