Natural Gas Exports by Country 2024

Natural gas may be exported by pipeline or refined and cooled to make liquefied natural gas and then sent by ship, truck, or rail. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2021 and the subsequent disruption of Russian natural gas exports in 2022 with the closure of a major pipeline to Europe changed the global trade in natural gas.

In 2022, the United States surpassed Russia to become the world's leading natural gas exporter. Russia still exported more by pipeline than the USA, but America exceeded the LNG exports of Russia by a significant amount. There is a trend to increase LNG exports worldwide.

  • Volumes are displayed in millions of cubic feet. For example, France's listed value of 571,399 corresponds to 571,399,000,000 (more than 571 trillion) cubic feet of natural gas.
  • Data for most countries indicate exports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) via ship. Data for Canada and Mexico also include exports via pipeline and truck, and Canada data also includes Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
