The Northwest Territories is one of Canada’s federal territories. It is located in Northern Canada, and it has a total area of 442,000 square miles, making it the second-largest territory by area of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its total area makes up 13.5% of the entire nation. The estimated population in 2018 is 44,736, and it is the 11th most populous territory in Canada.
There are 10 major ethnic groups living in the Northwest Territories. First Nations make up the largest group, comprising over 36% of the total population. Other major ethnic groups in the region include English, Canadian, Scottish, Irish, Inuit, French, German, Metis and Ukrainian.
Over 46% of the population is Roman Catholic. Other major denominations observed in the Northwest Territories include the United Church of Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada. Over 17% of the total population does not practice a religion. There are 11 official languages recognized in the territory. This includes English, French, Cree and Chipewyan – just to name a few. The most spoken language in the area is English, with 77.5% of the population speaking this language. Hundreds of residents say that they are bilingual, while some don’t speak any of the official languages of the territory.
Mining is a major industry in the Northwest Territories. This region is home to BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto mines, which is where many of the world’s diamonds are mined. Other important natural resources for the territory include natural gas, petroleum and gold.
As previously mentioned, the estimated population of the Northwest Territories is 44,736. This reflects growth from the last recorded population of 41,786. The population of the territory hit its peak in 1996, with a total count of 64,402. In 2001, the population dropped to just over 37,000. Since that time, the territory’s population has risen at a very slow rate, leading to questions over future growth of the area.
