Saskatchewan History

Pre-1700s

Plains Indigenous peoples including Cree, Assiniboine, and Blackfoot nations hunted buffalo across the territory.

1690s-1870s

European fur traders established posts, gradually transitioning the region from Indigenous territory to colonial control.

1870s-1880s

The disappearance of buffalo and arrival of the railway led to treaties with First Nations and an influx of agricultural settlers.

1885

The North-West Rebellion led by Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont occurred in Saskatchewan territory.

1905
