Zoroastrian is an ancient monotheistic religion that originated in Iran (then Persia) over 3,000 years ago. One of the oldest faiths, it was founded by the prophet Zoroaster and centers on the cosmic struggle between good and evil. It proclaims the importance of individual choice in promoting truth and righteousness. Zoroastrianism follows the Threefold Path of ASHA tenets. The main focus of the religion is a dedication to “Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds.”
Zoroastrianism is still practiced around the world. However, it is practiced more in some countries than in others. In this article, we will take a closer look at the statistics involving Zoroastrians and learn which countries have higher and lower populations of this religion.
It’s estimated that, worldwide, there are 120,000 Zoroastrians. The majority of those live in India, Iran, and North America. India houses the highest population of Zoroastrian members, with the highest concentration of them in the Dadar Parsi Colony. Approximately 50,000 Zoroastrians live in the country, although many suspect the numbers are much higher. In Iran and Iraq, it’s estimated that 15,000 Zoroastrians may live in each country, but some estimate that the numbers could exceed 25,000.
There is also a formidable population of 14,405 Zoroastrians in the United States. At this point, the population levels per country begin dropping dramatically. Canada is next on the list, and this country has about half the number of Zoroastrians living in its borders than in the United States. Uzbekistan follows at 7,000, The United Kingdom at 4,000, Tajikistan at 2,700, Australia at 2,577, and Afghanistan tying with Azerbaijan at 2,000 each round out the top eleven.
Several areas of the world also have members of the Zoroastrian faith but in smaller numbers. Hong Kong, for example, is home to 204 members, as of 2012. Singapore had around 372 during that same timeframe. The countries of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates were home to 380 members as of 2012. It is important to note that these countries are considered to be a collective unit when it comes to the number of Zoroastrians living within their borders. Thus, it’s 380 across all the five countries.
While most Zoroastrians live in India and Iran, smaller communities can also be found in Europe and certain countries of Central Asia other than Uzbekistan and Tajikistan where the numbers are in the thousands.
