Swakopmund is the third-most populous city in Namibia and the capital of the Erongo administrative district, home to about 45,000 people. Otjiwarongo, Okahandja, and Keetmanshoop are the only other cities with populations of over 20,000. Together, these six cities have a combined population of about 612,100, or 23.8% of Namibia’s total population.

About 51.04% of Namibia’s population lives in cities and urban areas, and about 48.96% lives in rural areas. This is a significant increase in the urban population since 2009 when 40.6% of the population was urban. The country’s urbanization rate is around 1.94%.
