Known as the Battle Born State, Nevada exists in the Western Region of the United States. While Nevada is not a coastal state and is rather a landlocked state, it is relatively near the Pacific Ocean, the only barrier being California. Due to its proximity to a U.S. coastline, Nevada’s weather changes based on the cool fronts traveling inward from the ocean. With Utah in the east and Arizona in the southeast, Nevada is surrounded by three other states in the U.S. Oregon and Idaho lie to the north of Nevada. As mentioned, California is towards the west.
Nevada has GPS coordinates of 38.8026° N and 116.4194° W. The centermost point of the Silver State is situated at a latitude of 39° 30.3' N and a longitude of 116° 55.9' W.
With a length of 492 miles and a width of 322 miles, Nevada has a total area of 110,567 square miles. Of this total area, water covers approximately 761 square miles, while the remaining 109,806 square miles is made up of land. In percentages, Nevada is 0.69% water and 99.31% land. Based on total area, Nevada is the seventh largest state in the U.S.
The Census Bureau lists Nevada’s population as an estimated 2,998,000 people. Taking its total area into account, Nevada has a population density of 27.1, meaning that there are roughly 27 people per square mile of land. In terms of population, Nevada is the thirty-third most populated state.
To the north, Nevada reaches as far as the border Nevada shares with Oregon and Idaho. This is also the location of the forty-second parallel. In the east, the most extreme point is Nevada’s border with both Arizona and Utah. The southernmost point of Nevada is along the Colorado River, while the westernmost point is near Lake Tahoe, along the border that separates California and Nevada.
Nevada has one of the highest mean levels of elevation which is a grand total of 5,500 feet above sea level. At its lowest point, Nevada is barely 480 feet above sea level, located along the Colorado River as it flows through the south of Nevada. At its highest point, Boundary Peak in Esmeralda County reaches an impressive height of 13,140 feet above sea level. This denotes the tallest point in the state of Nevada.
