Markham is a city located in Southern Ontario, a province of Canada. It is located within the Greater Toronto area and is situated about 19 miles from downtown Toronto. It was granted status as a city in 2012. The population according to the 2016 Census is 328,966, making it the 16th most populous city in Canada and the fourth most populous city in the Greater Toronto Area.
The city has a total area of approximately 212.35 square kilometers (81.99 square miles). The population density is currently at 1,549.2 individuals residing per square kilometer as of the 2016 Census.
The median age of residents in Markham is 41.1 years of age, which is slightly lower than that of the national average (41.2 years of age).
Almost 90% of people living in Markham are Canadian citizens. The city has the highest visible minority population of any Canadian city at 72.3%. It is just one of eight major cities that does not have a racial majority group. Almost 40% of people in Markham are East Asian, over 27% are White, over 19% are South Asian, close to 4% are Southeast Asian, just over 3% are West Asian, 3.2% are Black, and 1.9% are mixed race.
Nearly 30% of people in Markham do not follow a particular religion. The remaining inhabitants that do primarily follow Christianity, while there is also a smaller mix of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Jews.
The city’s unemployment rate is just over 8% and is slightly higher than the national average. The median household income also is higher than the national average.
At the time of the 2011 Census, the population had grown over 15% since 2006 – about three times faster than Canada’s growth rate. This flourishing city is only expected to continue to grow at a steady rate into the future.
