Havana's 2024 population is now estimated at 2,152,520. In 1950, the population of Havana was 1,141,960. Havana has grown by 3,590 in the last year, which represents a 0.17% annual change. These population estimates and projections come from the latest revision of the UN World Urbanization Prospects. These estimates represent the Urban agglomeration of Havana, which typically includes Havana's population in addition to adjacent suburban areas.
Havana is a city in Cuba, but it isn’t just any city. In addition to being the country’s capital city, it is also the largest by population. The population recorded during the last official census was 2,106,146.
Havana isn’t just the most significant city by population. It is also Cuba’s largest city by area, which measures in at over 728.26 kilometers squared ( approximately 281.18 square miles). When breaking down the population, the city has a population density of 7,490 people per square mile.
In terms of ethnicity, Havana's population is reported to be:
White: 58.4%, (Spanish descent most common) Mestizo or Mulatto (mixed race): 26.4% Black: 15.2%
Asian: 0.2%When we turn to religion among the population of Havana, there are no reliable statistics. Christianity is widespread and is often combined with a practice known as Santeria.
Throughout the years, Havana has traditionally seen growth of its population. During the 1950s through 1970s, the population growth was in the double digits. The population exceeded 1 million between 1943 and 1953. The city hit its next population milestone of 2 million residents during the 1980s. More recently, though, Havana has seen a slight drop in its population, with data showing that the population dropped 1.7% between 2009 and 2012.
This is mainly attributed to a low birth rate and high life expectancy, as well as controlled migration. Population growth is expected to slow and decline through the future as <a href=http://www.businessinsider.com/cuba-has-a-major-demographic-problem-2015-10>birth rates remain down and the population grows older.
