Cuba Overview

Cuba has 1 cities with more than a million people, 22 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 117 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Cuba is Havana, with a population of 2,163,824 people.

Cuba is the 106th largest country in the world by area, and it has a large population that has exceeded 11 million residents. When the population numbers are broken down by city, it’s easy to see that Havana, the country’s largest city, contributes considerably to this total number. With over 2.1 million inhabitants, Havana is not only the largest city in Cuba, but it is also the only major city to have surpassed the 1,000,000 population milestone. The second most populous city, Santiage de Cuba, has passed the 500,000 mark for its population, but it still lags considerably behind Havana. In addition to Santiago de Cuba, there are 22 other cities that have populations of more than 100,000 people. Further adding to the total count are the 115 Cuban cities that have a minimum population of 10,000 people. These cities, along with smaller cities and towns, are spread across 15 provinces and one special municipality.

There are also a considerable number of people living in rural areas, with just under one-quarter of the population living in outside of the country’s urban regions. The population growth rate of Cuba has stalled recently, showing very little growth in the area. At this rate, it doesn’t look as though Cuba’s major cities will be surpassing population milestones in the near future, although an acceleration in growth can change the outlook of this country and its cities.
