The city of Hamburg is one of the most well-known cities in Germany. It is not just a spectacular place to visit, but one that is steeped in history as the city has been destroyed many times throughout the centuries. Each time the destruction came, the residents worked to build the city of Hamburg better than before. Because of their resilience and refusal to give up, Hamburg became more prosperous with every setback. Today the people of Hamburg no longer have to contend with as much upset in the city, but they are just as resilient as ever.

City Size and Population Density

The population density within the city is quite high at 6,010 people for every square mile.

Demographics of Hamburg

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, and the overall population is 1,739,117. The population of Hamburg did have a slight downturn between 1995 and 2010, but since that dip, it has begun to bounce back as people are drawn to the opportunities within Hamburg for technology-related employment. There are approximately 1049 females for every 1000 males in Hamburg.

In terms of religion, 27.0% of the population belonged to the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church, and 10.7% to the Roman Catholic Church. An additional 55% stated they had no religion.

Education and Students

Educating students is paramount to keeping the economy of any city intact and growing. For Hamburg residents and immigrants coming into the country, there are several choices for educating the little ones. Education starts with daycare centers. There are 1,039 centers to choose from for the earliest educational experience. Mandatory schooling in Hamburg begins with primary school. There are 244 primary schools and 195 secondary schools for parents to choose from and it is estimated that the combined total of students within these schools is 167,714. For those that wish to pursue higher education and want to remain in Hamburg, there are a total of 19 colleges servicing around 90,000 students annually.

Religion

The religions represented in Hamburg are not as extensive as in other cities. Currently, statistics show that 65% of the overall population claim that they are Christian, 23% claim to be Protestants, and 31% claim Catholicism as their main religion. There are more religions within the country and Muslims are currently attempting to have their religion classified as well, but there is no current data apart from an ongoing debate within the government and a petition by Muslims to see this happen.

Tourism

As with most historical cities, tourism is a significant part of life in Hamburg. Tourism in the town grows by at least 7.2% annually. Hamburg hotels maintain an average of 75% occupancy throughout the year, and that is after 5,280 new beds were added to accommodate extra tourists. The overall revenue from tourists according to overnight accommodations alone is $11.5 million. The high demand for tourism is due to recent campaigns by the government to increase the number of United States tourists coming into the country. Currently, the primary tourists come from countries such as Switzerland and England.
