Currently, statistics show that 65% of the overall population claim that they are Christian, 23% claim to be Protestants, and 31% claim Catholicism as their main religion. There are more religions within the country and Muslims are currently attempting to have their religion classified as well, but there is no current data apart from an ongoing debate within the government and a petition by Muslims to see this happen.
As with most historical cities, tourism is a significant part of life in Hamburg. Tourism in the town grows by at least 7.2% annually. Hamburg hotels maintain an average of 75% occupancy throughout the year, and that is after 5,280 new beds were added to accommodate extra tourists. The overall revenue from tourists according to overnight accommodations alone is $11.5 million. The high demand for tourism is due to recent campaigns by the government to increase the number of United States tourists coming into the country. Currently, the primary tourists come from countries such as Switzerland and England.
