Canola is an important crop because its seeds are the source of canola, or rapeseed, oil all over the world. In fact, canola oil is the #3 edible oil produced and used worldwide. The name canola refers to a blend of the words "Canada" (where the rapeseed plant was bred for production) and "ola" from the Latin root word oleo, meaning "oil."

The European Union alone produces 19.5 million metric tons of canola every year. The numbers continually increase year over year, with the 2023 crops set to break the 2022 record by over 14%. Canada comes in second place, producing around 19 million metric tons of canola each year. China is in third place with 14.7 million metric tons and India trails in fourth with about 11 million metric tons.

The United States is much further down the list, after Australia, Russia, and Ukraine, but its own canola production capacity is growing. The US currently grows around 2 million acres of canola in states like North Dakota, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Texas, Kansas, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Kentucky, and Washington. Worldwide, canola production estimates are around 84.34 million metric tons for 2023.

  • Values in table are expressed using the unit "thousands of metric tons (1000MT)".
  • Technically, the term canola applies only to a few specific strains of rapeseed. However, nearly all rapeseed grown in the world today is canola, as non-canola varieties have very few uses. Therefore, production data for rapeseed and canola are often used interchangeably.
  • Countries whose production totaled less than 1% of total global production are listed with a placeholder production of 0%.
