Ukraine is a very large country located in Eastern Europe. It used to be part of the Soviet Union, but after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine became an independent country. Ukraine is largely still a part of the developing world, but it has grown and expanded significantly during the past few decades. Now, it is an integral part of Europe, and it has become a full-fledged democracy. Furthermore, Ukraine has become more closely tied to Western Europe and the Soviet Union during the past few decades, and this has been a significant source of stress for Russia. Putin himself has even said that Ukraine never got permission to separate from Russia.
Yes, Ukraine does have a water port. Even though Ukraine does not have easy access to the ocean, it does sit on the Black Sea. The Black Sea is a very important source of commerce, not only for Ukraine but also for the rest of Europe. Even though Russia annexed Crimea a few years ago, Ukraine still has plenty of ports that provide access to the Black Sea, including Odessa. Ukraine is also one of the largest producers of grain in the world, and these ports are very important for making sure that lots of countries on Earth have access to a reliable source of food.
Because of the central location of Ukraine, there are a lot of countries that border it. For example, Russia encompasses almost the entire eastern border of Ukraine, and Belarus also has a very large border with Ukraine itself. Poland, which is largely seen as a gateway between Central Europe and Eastern Europe, also has a very large border with Ukraine. None of the other countries that border Ukraine includes Slovakia, Moldova, and Hungary. In addition, there are some countries that do not necessarily border Ukraine, but they are still relatively close to this country. Examples include Turkey, Bulgaria, and Georgia. Many of these countries have been impacted by the conflict going on in Ukraine right now.
Yes, there is a war going on in Ukraine. Even though Putin has called it a special military operation, and he forbids people in Russia from calling it a war, the reality is that Ukraine is the site of the largest land war in Europe since WWII. In the winter of 2022, Russia decided to invade Ukraine because it believed that Ukraine was going to become a part of NATO, significantly increasing security issues on Russia’s border. While Putin thought that he could conquer all of Ukraine in just a few days, that is not what has happened. Now, Ukraine is pushing Russia out, and the war has been raging for many months. It remains to be seen whether Ukraine is going to drive Russia out of Ukraine completely, but it is obvious that Russia is losing the war right now.
