1. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is the third most popular dog in the United States and is listed as the number one most popular breed in the world. It grows as tall as approximately 24-26 inches and lives seven to 10 years. It originates from Germany.

Popularity in Other Countries

Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan are more places that like German shepherds. Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Iraq and Afghanistan also have them.

2. Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever weighs as much as 65-75 pounds and is the number two most popular dog in the world. In the U.S., the Golden Retriever is the number four most preferred dog as of 2020.

The Golden Retriever came from the United Kingdom, England and Scotland. This dog has a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years and grows to a maximum of approximately 22-24 inches high.

"Goldens" play well with children and other animals. They’re considered one of the most mild-mannered breeds.

Popularity in Other Countries

Colombia, Mongolia and Jordan are some other countries that enjoy Golden Retrievers. Burma and Cyprus also have them.

3. Labrador Retriever

As of 2022, the Labrador Retriever took the number one spot for the 31st consecutive year in the U.S. It’s the number three most popular dog in the world.

It usually lives about 10-12 years and grows up to about 23-24 inches high and usually weighs a maximum of 70-80 pounds. The Lab came from the United Kingdom and seems to love sports and play.

This dog often went on fishing trips in Canada. Israel, Great Britain, Brazil and Sweden also cherish their playful Labs.

4. Rottweiler

The Rottweiler comes in at number eight of the top 10 preferred dog breeds in the United States. It’s also the number four most popular in the world. It typically weighs a maximum of 100-135 pounds and grows from 25 to 27 inches and originates from Germany.

The Rottweiler plays well and will remain loyal to its human companions. It also observes its area and protects its family but may sometimes be standoffish to people it doesn’t know.

Popularity in Other Countries

France seems to like the Rottweiler. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Botswana and Venezuela also appreciate them.

5. French Bulldog

It ranked the second most preferred dog breed in 2020 by the U.S. and number five in the world. This dog originates from France and usually lives about 10-12 years. It also grows to about 11 to 13 inches high and usually weighs between 16 and 25 pounds.

It typically doesn’t need much exercise or outdoor space. That makes it ideal for someone living in a one-bedroom apartment or small house.

Popularity in Other Countries

The United Kingdom seems fond of the French Bulldog. It’s also found in Australia, Rwanda and Thailand.
