Only two U.S. states are fully located within the Pacific Time Zone: California and Washington. In these states, all regions observe Pacific Time, making timekeeping consistent across the entire state.
Both states also observe daylight saving time, shifting to Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) during part of the year.
Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon are only partially located in the Pacific Time Zone. In these states, time zone boundaries divide regions, meaning different parts of the state observe different time zones depending on location.
Most U.S. states are not located in the Pacific Time Zone and instead observe Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Hawaii-Aleutian time. These states follow their respective time zones based on geographic location and federal designation.
All other states fall outside the Pacific Time Zone, though some may border states that do observe Pacific Time.
In states that are partially in the Pacific Time Zone, the boundary is often based on geography or regional connections. For example, northern Idaho observes Pacific Time, while the rest of the state follows Mountain Time. Similarly, most of Oregon and Nevada use Pacific Time, but small eastern portions follow Mountain Time.
Some exceptions are based on practical considerations rather than official designation. For instance, the town of Hyder, Alaska, unofficially follows Pacific Time due to its close ties to nearby communities in British Columbia, even though the state is not officially in the Pacific Time Zone.
