Tiktok Ban States 2024

Tiktok Ban States 2024

Tiktok Ban States 2024

  • Data current as of June 2024. However, bans on TikTok are an emerging legal trend and additional bans may be implemented at any time.
  • Current state bans do not prohibit private individuals from using TikTok on their personal devices. Rather, state bans prohibit use of TikTok by government employees using government-owned devices. States may also forbid online storefronts from offering the TikTok app for download to users located within their state.
  • As of March 2024, 39 states had banned TikTok from government devices, as had the federal government.
  • In April 2024, the federal government gave TikTok owner ByteDance a deadline of January 19, 2025 to sell TikTok, citing security concerns over the TikTok app. The government has indicated an intention to impose a blanket ban on TikTok for all users located in the US if ByteDance refuses to comply.
  • If implemented, the federal TikTok ban would override any state-level regulations.
