There are nearly 53 million people considered high net worth individuals with a net worth of more than $1 million each across 20 countries. High net worth individuals have at least $1 million in cash and assets that can be converted to cash. The assets considered often exclude stocks and bonds because they can result in losses if sold at the wrong time.

The United States leads those countries with 22.7 million people with a net worth of more than $1 million. The number of U.S. residents considered high net worth individuals is significantly higher than all other countries, with the U.S. making up about 43% of all high net worth individuals in the top 20 countries.

China ranks second in the number of high net worth individuals, with 6.2 million people with a net worth of more than $1 million. That's less than a third of the number of people considered high net worth individuals in the United States.

Countries with fewer than 3 million high net worth individuals

France comes in third among the top 20 countries with people whose net worth exceeds $1 million. There were 2.8 million high net worth individuals in France.

Several of the top countries with the most high net worth individuals reported fewer than 2 million people whose net worth exceeded $1 million. Australia leads this group of countries with high net worth people, reporting 1.8 million residents with net worths of $1 million or more.
